FAQs

Can my child have a taster class before enrolling?

When starting with us we offer the first 2 weeks as a trial before committing to a full term. It is important that the class is the correct one for your child.

After the first 2 weeks, the remaining term fees are payable up front to keep your child’s place. If a term is more than 6 weeks we offer the option to pay half termly.

We also offer the same 2-week trial for adults.

You can book a trial for any of our classes on the specific page.

At what age can my child start a class?

We accept children from the age of 3 for ballet & tap. However, for other genres we don’t start them until they are 5 years of age.

This is to do with the physical development of the skeletal and muscular system along with cognitive development.

Can boys come to classes?

Absolutely!! Boys are always welcome to join, and we have several in some of our classes.

Also, men are welcome to join any of our adult classes.

How do I pay for the dance classes?

After the initial 2-week trial, we prefer that you pay your term fees by bank transfer, details will be provided, alternatively we can accept cash at the door.

We have the facility to take contactless payments, however, because of processing costs, we kindly ask that this is only used as a last resort, which will help us keep our class fees down.

Do we have to pay for missed classes?

Yes, we limit our numbers in each class for safe teaching practice, therefore when you commit to a class it needs to be paid for.

In exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to take a leave of absence from a class.

This needs to be discussed in advance with Ms Jennie and arrangements will be discretionary.

Do you charge an administration fee for classes?

No, we do not charge administration fees for classes or to join our dance school.

What should children wear to the trial lesson?

To begin with, children can come dressed in comfortable sport style clothing, e.g. leggings/shorts and a t-shirt. For safety reasons we ask children to wear hard soled shoes for tap or soft soled indoor shoes for all other classes. Of course, if you already own the correct dance shoe for the class they can be worn.

Please do not buy a specific dance shoe especially for the trial class as there is a huge variety out there. We can advise the most appropriate shoe for your child for their class. We might even have a suitable pair in our swap box.

Do students have to wear a set dance uniform?

Yes. By the start of their second term all pupils are expected to wear the correct uniform for their classes. Both shoes & uniform items are available from our school shop along with other dance sundries.

If you are unsure about which items or sizes please ask before buying. We also have a swap box of old uniforms, as well as some brand-new stock, so it is always worth checking with us if we have your child’s size before purchasing from the online shop.

Please note if your child decides to do their exams, only our official uniform will be accepted.

Can we stay and watch the lesson?

In our experience, children relax, pay attention, and enjoy the lessons far more without a parent or carer watching, and it tends to be very distracting to the whole class. Therefore, we suggest
parents/guardians encourage their child to come into the class by themselves. However, our priority is the child so in the case of young beginners, if a child is feeling anxious, we allow parents to accompany them in their first class if this will help settle the child.

Please note that the dance studio has glass walls so parents can watch the class without disturbing it.

Please also be aware that if your child is 8 or under a parent/guardian must remain in the building whilst your child is in the class. This is Aberdeenshire Council Policy.

Can my child still join the classes if a term has already started?

Yes of course, we welcome new joiners at any point during the term. Those who register part way through a term, will only pay for the remaining lessons in that term.

Please note we can only accept your child halfway through the term if we have available places. Alternatively, we can sign you to the ‘Waiting list’ and notify later if any places will be available.

What Syllabi do you offer? Does my child have to take examinations?

As a school we encourage our pupils to take examinations with the aim of achieving their best, but the exams are optional.

Examinations are designed to provide the children with both a goal and a sense of achievement. Our exams are conducted by an official NATD examiner, who themselves are regulated and monitored so that standards are fair and correct.

Should a pupil not wish to enter for an examination we will respect their choice with no bias.

Do you cater for children with additional needs?

All children are welcome at the school, including children with a disability and/or additional support needs.

Please feel free to contact Ms Jennie to discuss any special requirements.

Are There Any Limitations on Size, Fitness or Experience?

At J J Dancing we cater for all shapes, sizes, ages, fitness and flexibility levels without any limitations. If you’re unsure if a certain class is suitable for you, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

It is important that you disclose any medical issues or concerns before partaking in any class. Any issues shared will be treated with the utmost respect and confidentiality (with the exception of a medical emergency when information will be passed onto a medical professional).

I already attend another dance school; may I join your school for additional lessons?

In line with generally accepted dance school etiquette, we do not take pupils from another dance school for the same genre as they are already enrolled for elsewhere.

We may accept pupils for alternative lessons not offered at their existing school but with the understanding this has been discussed and cleared with their existing teacher.

We aim to be as ethical as possible towards fellow teachers and expect any transferring pupils to have given their required notice before switching to us.

What if my child does not want to attend the classes anymore?

We require half a term’s notice. Please send an email to let us know you plan to withdraw the child from class.

The same applies to all termly adult classes. PAYG adult classes require no notice but respectfully we ask that you inform us if you decided not to return.
